Trillium Community Forest
Trillium Community Forest was established by the Whidbey Camano Land Trust in 2010. Goals of the property include preventing development, providing public access for recreation, providing wildlife habitat, and implementing ecological forest management.
Some of the community benefits that this property provides include:
Public access for recreation, with a 7 mile trail system including a flat ADA accessible loop and free parking.
Protection of the headwaters of three watersheds, which provide clean water to Whidbey Island’s residents.
Conservation of valuable upland wildlife habitat, and an opportunity for residents to enjoy wildlife viewing.
Restoration efforts at Trillium Community Forest include forest thinning and diversity planting of different native trees, with the goal of converting a tree farm into a diverse forest ecosystem.
Additional Property Facts:
The property was slated for residential development in the early 2000s. It became available during the 2008 financial crisis, and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust fundraised $4 million to purchase and protect it!
Two rounds of forest thinning have been implemented since the property was purchased, improving forest health by reducing stocking from 600 to 125 trees per acre.
This property was originally 654 acres, but Whidbey Camano Land Trust has purchased additional adjacent pieces and brought the total acreage to 721.
